The "Brit a Day" series

What does a months-long parade of attractive British men have to do with fiction, you might well ask? These gentlemen have inspired some lovely scenes, part of the life I live in my head. Over time, some of these scenes reach out to one another and begin to form a story. For the present, each one of these pictures provides a writing prompt for me, a way to keep me writing with a sense of passion and narrative, even when the stories are not yet fully formed.

A Brit a Day [#673]

The third in the trilogy [unless I've lost count] of photos featuring David Tennant snugly wrapped in a black overcoat with red lining.  Enlarges to wallpaper size when opened in a new tab or browser.  Enjoy!

A Brit a Day [#672]

Above, Rachel Griffiths, Natasha Richardson, and Alan Rickman in a scene from "Blow Dry."  Below, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, and Humphrey Bogart in "Beat the Devil."  And the films have the same initials.

A Brit a Day [#671]

Matt Smith gets a bonus post this week--I'm never short of pictures of Matt Smith, the camera loves him so.  I'm especially fond of new finds from that photo shoot with that gorgeous suit and that lovely car.

Eddie Argos belts one out for the band or takes one for the team or something like that in a photo dated October 2009.

A Brit a Day [#669]

It's always so hard to pick just one picture of HIC for a post.  Here is a favorite--classic Desmond from LOST.

A Brit a Day [#668]

Matt Smith is decked out to play Mr. Banks in a new generation's 'Mary Poppins.'  [Not really, you know.]  In fact, he could play Jane and Michael's father Peter-Pan-style by simultaneously taking on the role of chimneysweep Bert.

Thanks again to Donna for passing this my way.  Good for you, Matt Lewis, I always knew it would happen.

A Brit a Day [#666]

It's post #666, so as a salute to little devils everywhere, here, go snuggle with a Dalek.  [It could be hiding a roll of toilet paper under its skirt.]

More amazing fan art from Lithrael--this time, Alan Rickman as Prof. Snape.  See last Monday's portrait of David Tennant by Lithrael in ABAD #659 below.

A Brit a Day [#664]

Native Englishman and Etonian Atticus Ross is part of the Academy award-winning composing team of Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor [recognized for 'The Social Network' soundtrack].  Reznor is also, of course, the genius behind Nine Inch Nails--if you go see 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' look for a nod toward NIN in the form of one character's T-shirt.  The GWTDT soundtrack is integral to the film, absolutely every inch of it.
These days, Ross lives in the US.  Along with Reznor and Mariqueen Maandig, they perform as the band How to Destroy Angels.  The band covers Bryan Ferry's 'Is Your Love Strong Enough?' for the closing credits of 'Dragon Tattoo.'

A Brit a Day [#663]

A week ago, I saw Daniel Craig [today's guest Brit] and Rooney Mara in 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.'  It starts to get confusing with the novel in my head as well as the Swedish language film and both of its sequels and now this, but I think I liked it a lot.  I especially liked this scene and how scared Craig's character was to have her stitch him up.  But for me, the best thing about the movie was Trent Reznor's and Atticus Ross's soundtrack.  And guess what? Atticus Ross is English.  More on that tomorrow.

A Brit a Day [#662]

More smiles from Henry Ian Cusick at last week's TCA meeting, where casts were out stumping for their new shows. The leather braid on his wrist was a birthday gift from his fan-girl group, the Sistahs.

A Brit a Day [#661]

I've been treating myself to streaming videos on my Kindle this week--I'm watching Matt Smith's first season on 'Doctor Who'.  I had not seen it when I began watching Season 6, so I'm having a lot of "Oh, that's what that's about" moments.  A lot of people won't jump into watching a show without seeing all the bits that you missed first, but I think 'Doctor Who' is a prime example of why Life's Too Short for that--there are nearly 50 years to catch up on.  Sometimes, you just have to get on with it.  And Wikipedia is there to help fill in the gaps.

A Brit a Day [#660]

Congratulations, Dan Radcliffe, Entertainment Weekly's entertainer of the year!  What a well deserved accolade--and to think we knew him when [are we picturing David Copperfield here?  or perhaps the son of the Tailor of Panama?]

A Brit a Day [#659]

This one's for Monday.

Wonderful fan art of Number Ten [David Tennant in 'Doctor Who'] by Lithrael.

A Brit a Day [#658]

There's something you don't see every day:  Alan Rickman in a white tie.  With, what...a raincoat?

A Brit a Day [#657]

Here is a description of love and marriage from a young man, Daniel Radcliffe, whom I assume is just beginning to figure out the complexities of relationships and commitment--

"When growing up, I thought of marriage as being very official, drawing up a contract. It seemed slightly clinical to me. But then you meet somebody that you really love and you think, 'Actually, I wouldn’t mind standing up in front of my friends and family and telling them how much I love you and that I want to be with you forever.'

"….I’m not an easy person to love. There are lots of times when I’m a very good boyfriend, but there are times when I’m useless. I mean, I’m a mess around the house. I talk nonstop. I become obsessed with things….And she listens to it, and she loves me for my oddness, my awkwardness, all of those things that I hate about myself. She finds them cute. I guess that’s love."

And here are the words of a man who'd been around the block a few times, Humphrey Bogart, lifted from the pages of his son Stephen's biography "In Search of My Father"--

A Brit a Day [#656]

London-based Eddie Argos once wrote a song called 'I'm Considering a Move to LA,' and his stateside pals had high hopes that the lyric would come true when Eddie met California-born-and-bred Dyan.  But alas, they did instead what many couples do when they're first starting out--they picked a place that was totally different for both of them and moved there.  I hope Berlin appreciates what it got in the transaction!

Henry Ian Cusick made an appearance in LA earlier this week [well, Pasadena] promoting his new show 'Scandal' which looks promising to be the next 'West Wing.'

A Brit a Day [#654]

Matt Smith played the troubled son in this production of 'That Face' [with Lindsay Duncan, right].  I think he came off looking remarkably like Juliet Stevenson.

A Brit a Day [#653]

Anime Los Angeles was delightful, but it's good to be back in my routine, and here we are--it's Tuesday, Dan's day, and that reminds me that there is so much to look forward to this year.  'Woman in Black' will be a must-see if someone will let me clutch them during the scary parts.

Thanks to my girlfriend Donna B. for this almost noirish photo of Dan and the following link to an interview in Parade:

Enjoy!

A Brit a Day [#652]

Happy 2012!--I'm still going to be away, kicking back until I get home from Anime Los Angeles next week.

Below is a photograph of Faye Dunaway taken by her husband, Brit photographer Terry O'Neill, the morning after she won the Academy Award for her performance in 'Network.'  She should have won one for 'Chinatown' two years earlier, imo, because 'Chinatown' is my favorite movie ever, ever.
